Biography

Sir Nic Cary, Bt BA (Hons) FCIHT FRSA is an expert in Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and data-driven services for transport. He is the founding director of Waysphere^®, which helps transport organisations to exploit ITS and to discover and extract greater value from their data.  Nic provides expert input to scheme developments, Intelligent Transport Systems design and public-sector funding initiatives. He is also the Associate Director of Delivery at DEFT153’s Data Discovery Centre. Before founding Waysphere, Nic was Head of Digital Transformation and Data at the UK’s Department for Transport. Here he led a programme to exploit the value of local transport data and improve data sharing. He also engaged with a number of foreign governments on digital transformation opportunities and data sharing policy. He is an adviser on various groups, including being a member of: the CIHT Technology & Innovation Panel; the Transport Data Initiative (TDI) Policy Group; and the Department for Transport (DfT) Local Transport Data Discovery Project Steering Group which met between January and June 2018. He is a frequent public speaker on the role of technology in future transport. Prior to Transport, he worked for the Cabinet Office, where he undertook various strategic programme management roles. An experienced technologist, he founded his own internet consultancy in 1995 and has since undertaken a wide variety of technology roles. Before that he had a successful career in marketing communications.
